Recollections summon a difficult happiness
Recollections summon a difficult happiness,
Summon an unforgiving and harsh delicacy.
Perhaps that is the cost of satisfaction:
One loves what time or whirlwind will obliterate.
Keep in mind, then, those whom you have adored
In blended euphoria and distress. Sing a tune
As gorgeous similar to your adoration, and grieve
Like one who is by some opportunity favoring moved.
Long stretches of grieving are a festival,
A dance whose recuperating elegance supports connection,
Yielding distress that will redemptive demonstrate.
This is a poem I wrote that contains many precious feelings.

The lamp on Marcus's nightstand has been on for three hours. It's 11:47 PM, and he hasn't moved from the bed. The envelope sits on the dresser across the room, Sarah's handwriting still crisp on the front: Read this when you're ready. Not before. She'd left it six months ago, back when leaving still felt impossible. Back when they were still negotiating the geometry of their collapse.
