Reckoning with GOD — Explain What Happened and Why?

Poetry - Explain Away My Sorrow

A man sits on the sand, tears flowing from each eye,

He looks upon the bible he clutches in his hand.

Water lapping at his feet, his attention fixated on the sky

His life is now incomplete when he lets out a desperate, haunting cry.

“Dear God, what have you done to me? I don’t understand why,”

“Why did you take my loved one away?”

He sat, awaiting his reply, “What do you have to say?”

Once more, he cried, “God, explain what happened and why?”

He gripped his bible harder and, once more, started to cry,

In despair more than in anger, he yells out — “You are nothing but a lie,”

He launches his bible into the sky, landing in the water nearby.

“I knew it would come to this; you can’t even tell me what happened and why?”

Brilliant rays of sunshine bursting through the clouds_ Author's own image_ 2023

A space opened up between the clouds, such brightness in the sky,

Overcome with fright and grabbing the attention of the man,

Covering his eyes from the brightness, a voice began to speak,

Was his God about to tell him what happened and why?

“My son, I ask you not to lose your faith and try not to cry,”

“I see the love and pain on your face,”

“Perhaps these words will give relief — your loved one sits by my side,”

“And I will try to tell you what happened and why.”

Her soul so pure, her job complete; it was time for her to try,

Just as I have always planned, I needed her to die.”

“To help me out with other folks who could not cope,

This is what happened and why.”

Do not despair; she is always there and asks you not to cry,”

“Your little dog will live forever always by your side,”

“She says to tell you she is alright and you’re always in her heart,”

“I hope you can understand my reasoning and why.”

He got up from the sandy beach, the light gone from the sky,

Knowing she was safe with God, the man no longer cried,

Taking solace in the difference he knew that she would make,

He now understood more clearly what had happened and why.
