Reasons For My Mask

Conceal And Disguise

Maybe I'll learn how to love my reflection

But for now, I think it's best tucked away

Behind a mask made for just this occasion

Cause today, it's not meant for display

One day who I see, when I gaze in the mirror

Is a woman who is more than enough

But today I need choose, shabby chic or demure

A disguise to help me call your bluff

Cause you say what you say and at the end of the day

I can't tell if it's it true or it's not

My perception is faulty, on the verge of decay

And I can't risk being put on the spot

So I switch out the mask to keep you on your toes

Better you, cause my feet kinda hurt

If we will last till you get through, who knows

But it won't be my name in the dirt

Someday I won't care about rules or rejection

Rip that mask off and throw it away

Until then I wear them for my own protection

And I guess it's a game we all play

A mask for protection , its very sad 😔 When a child need to do this let alone an adult for self preservation

  • Rules and rejection… that’s a tough one to get beyond. So many of us feel that if we don’t live by the rules (or norms of society) then we will be rejected… nobody likes that feeling of rejection. Great job, Kelli.

Excellent piece, Kelli! Love the emphasis on swapping the mask for the sake of your own vulnerability.
