READING, HEATWAVES AND HURRICANES

What to do when it's too hot to do anything

READING, HEATWAVES AND HURRICANES

I’ll admit he’s not much of a reader.

He’d much rather work in the yard.

But this time of year, with the sun blazing down,

Working outside is too hard.

*

He’s not into reading much fiction.

He feels stories like this are a waste.

True crime, political, or war stories

Are more to his limited taste.

*

Lo and behold! The TV is off.

It’s not even catching a look.

Wait, what’s this I see? What’s in his hand?

Wow! He’s reading a book!

*

I see from the cover, it’s different.

It’s one from a mutual friend.

Oh, my word! It’s a fictional book.

Will he read it all the way to the end?

*

I know he wants to go fishing,

But it’s really just too hot for that.

There’s no way to escape the heat of the sun –

Even if wearing a hat!

*

We now stay inside where it’s cooler.

Or at least until this weather breaks.

The heat is enough to melt concrete!

We’ll do whatever it takes.

*

I’ll write or edit my photos.

He might take a nap or two.

He’ll put on the TV, then might pick up his book.

Hey! He’s still reading! Who knew, yeah, who knew.

*

The only good thing I might surmise

Until hopefully this heatwave wanes,

Is that it seems to make the Atlantic way too hot

Even for hurricanes!

Let’s at least hope so.
