Rats in the Restaurant

Rats in the restaurant, the owner knew,

Crawling on food left open,

The smell of dead rats lingered

Behind the partitions,

After they put down poison.

Dirty, filthy—

A threat to human life,

Disease in their wake.

Then one day,

A rat ran over the tables

At the busiest hour.

Weeks later—nothing.

A restaurant shut down,

An owner fined.

But still, the rats remained,

Hidden in the walls,

Wondering where

The food source had gone.
