Quiet Strength, Unrequited Love

Finding a way to get by

Top Story - July 2025
In a crowd, still alone. (Image generated with AI)

And there it is once again.

That old, familiar feeling

starts creeping in.

Thinking you might

love someone

so much more

than they can ever

love you.

***

You take a few deep breaths,

wait for the overwhelm to dissipate.

Gently wipe those

tears from your cheek.

Plaster a fake smile

on your face,

and head back out

into the world.

***

Later, someone will

touch you on the shoulder

and ask if you’re okay.

You’ll nod and smile

to reassure them.

***

You will be okay,

with time.

After all, they still need you

and you’ll be there for them.

You always find a way to

deal with it.

Find a way to

get by.

Sandy. This is heartbreaking and like the many others have saiid below me, reassuringly relatable. I can't believe it didn't place in the challenge, but glad it got a Top Story. You always know how to drill into those difficult feelings and make them sound beautifully poetic and as hurtful and hard to handle as they are. Well wrought and congrats on Top Story - saw you entered it into the Mask challenge, which I think is a great decision!

  • So simple, so real. That quiet ache of giving more than you get — you captured it beautifully. This lingers.
