Free Verse Poem

First name Maries

Matronymic bestowed with intention

In holy reverence; a family tradition

Valiantly named for French ideals

Of a sacred matron

An army of middle-name Maries

(I belong to this group)

Are a curious vestige

Of quaint Catholicism

Discretely severed into secular abstraction

Laissez-faire pedestrian blaspheming

No clever inspiration, this benign designation

A mother’s afterthought

Her cognition spent after a laborious ordeal

With no snacks

I do not wish to give offence to my sisters

But we are, in truth

Virtually nameless

This bridge is elementary to dissemble

A banal, bootlegging appellation

Riding on the merit of first and last’s respectability

I hope today’s daughters

Are rid of this tiresome trend

But also not named anything too weird

(I belong to this group as well)

To be singled out for irritating commentary

I've always had a strong fascination with names. I've named some of my female characters after condiments, lol. Loved your poem!

A witty poem about the unremarkable middle name Maries and its fading tradition
