Proof That Friends Are Terrible Influences

A Story Of Unexpected Adventures & Questionable Street Food

It’s afternoon, and I am getting bored. The house is silent—Mom is at tea, sis is napping, and so is my younger brother.

Ding dong! Ding dong! The bell rang. I wondered who it could be. Were my silent prayers answered? Did someone come to save me from this boredom?

Even my steps echoed through the silent hallways. Opening the door, I found Stacy standing there with a shoulder bag, practically bouncing with energy.

I guessed she wasn’t going to come inside. Oh well! Grabbing my bag, texting Mom, and locking the door, I left with her.

Stacy is another one of my neighbors, and she has her on-and-off days. On her "on" days, she’s like a hyper monkey; on her "off" days, she’s like a sloth.

Together, we headed to the nearest marketplace. After a few minutes of mindless walking, we agreed that shopping under the blazing sun wasn’t a good idea.

We stopped at the vendor behind the mirror store and paid for two glasses of freshly made apple juice. Now that hits the spot.

I was ready to head home when Stacy dragged me off to another vendor, daring me to try some local food I’d never had before.

She really knows me well. I usually play it safe, but I decided to give it a try. Turning to the vendor, I asked, "I’m so ready for this! What’s the weirdest thing you have?"

I’m realizing now that wasn’t very polite. <Back to the Story> The vendor didn’t seem offended. He smiled and told us that today’s special was Spicy Brain Curry.

The horror and disgust must have been clear on my face. In a shaky voice, I asked, "B-Brain? Like… actual brain?!" It didn’t help that the vendor laughed while Stacy yelled, "Just try it, coward!"

She’s tried all the weird local foods, but I’m not her. Anyway, taking a deep breath and mustering my non-existent courage, I took a bite.

A burst of flavors made my taste buds come alive. The spice was a bit too much, but the fusion of herbs was brilliant. It had a scrambled egg-like texture—weirdly good.

I can confidently say that if you were blindfolded and given this dish, you’d think it was a herb omelet. Gobbling it down, I raised my plate and asked for more—but a non-spicy version this time.

I think my friend was shocked, but the vendor was happy and gave us a thumbs-up, saying, "Spicy Brain Curry approved!"

The house was quiet, boredom near,
Then came the bell—oh, joy!—Ding Dong! clear.

Stacy arrived, a whirlwind of cheer,
"Let’s ditch this place, adventure’s here!"

Let’s go eat!" she grinned with cheer,
Then dared me: "Try this— dish, dear!"

One spicy bite—oh, what a twist!
Tastes like eggs (but don’t check the list).

Vendor laughs, I beg for more—
Who knew weird food could be such a score?

Have you ever tried any weird food? Would you dare to try something unusual—like Spicy Brain Curry

Another great and funny story, Staringale! 😁 And of course a wonderful poem at the end. I look forward to reading your stories every week (though obviously no pressure on you to write one every week; only when you feel like it). Stacy sounds like a funny friend to have, haha. I'm curious to know what the actual ingredients were in the curry. Unless it's a trade secret. 🤔 And, to answer the question at the end, no I don't try weird food, lol. I try and stay clear from it. I'm guessing you don't mind the odd food now after eating the spicy brain curry 😂

  • Wait, so it was an actual brain? What brain was it? I mean what animal's? Because I don't think it's human brain, lol

This story brought back memories of my own adventures with friends. I've had similar experiences where I was dared to try something strange. Like that time, a buddy dared me to try a unique local dish. It was intimidating at first, but like you, I took a chance and was pleasantly surprised. It makes me wonder, what's the strangest food you've ever been dared to try? And did you end up liking it? Also, I can relate to being bored at home and then having an unexpected adventure. It's amazing how a simple invitation can lead to such memorable moments.
