You’re a prince in a castle.

A castle your dad built.

A castle you never asked for.

A castle that has everything.

Until a wizard suggests that you ask for more.

Your father can’t provide your purpose forever explains the wizard. You begin to wonder for the first time.

You ask your mother, “what else is there?”

She understands the question in way you don’t yet.

She doesn’t answer, she only lowers the gates and wishes you safe travels.

You soon come to learn the the world is far more vast than you had imagined. In fact the more you see the more you seem to appreciate that you haven’t seen anything yet. There is far more to experience out here than one lifetime could adequately explore.

You wonder what the wizard inspired you for...

You search for a purpose. High and low.

You walk in circles’round the globe.

They call you a wizard wherever you go.

One day you find a house made of stone.

“You don’t recognize it?” Asks a crone.

“No, should I?” You reply in a moan.

“This is your palace. You are a prince no more.”

This crone is more familiar than a moment ago.

“Why should I have left? If this was to be my keep, why could it not be kept?”

“Do you not breathe in order to see your next breath? Do you see steep hills and tremble before you step?”

“Answer my question, what was the purpose of my quest?”

“The purpose of any quest is to learn what question comes next.”

“Am I a king or a wizard?”

“Whichever suits you best.”

I’m hoping to profit from my existential dread. Maybe if I write something ~you~ find worth while my life will somehow transcend my mortal body and I’ll live on forever... but probably not.
