Until You Can Finally Hit Pause

Whispers begin to crescendo

Names and curses heard through the vent

release of all the tension and anger that was pent

Hands cupping your ears followed by a rush of tears

Wanting all the yelling to crashing to just disappear

To just pause life, rewind and stop on those happier days

Ones where you didn’t have to press play

Press play

Filling the room with music

Turning the screams to strings

And pounding to drums

Blinding you from what your families become

Press Play

To rid your mind of the bruises

On the mother who is,

trying to hold on for the sake of her kids

Press Play

To hide the visions of the empty bottles in the trash

After seeing her daddy drunk off his ass

Press Play

And hope the neighbors don’t call in a noise complaint

Neighbors that give you pitying looks you hate

Because you look like you get no sleep

And you give those sorry excuses for it,

Like a record on repeat

Press Play

And remember what happens in this house, stays in this house

Because your mother doesn't want her business spread about

As if her marriage wasn’t falling apart

And a wall and chains weren’t forming around her kids heart

Fast forward to now and ponder why you can’t get close

Why the thought of marriage leaps to divorce and hangs over you like a misguided ghost

Wondering if you can trust your heart

Because home is where the heart is

But the only home you’ve know was broken one

So you try to figure out when you got this way

So you rewind, fast forward, pause STOP to find the day-

The day where you first had to hit play.
