Près de l'eau

An Ekphrastic Sonnet

By D. J. ReddallPublished 7 months ago 1 min read
"La Grenouillère," Claude Monet, 1869

So many petty worries and concerns

Rumors to be spread and gossip savored

Garments to be displayed with fresh patterns

For your sleek or stout forms. deftly tailored

You are always fishing for the money

Your sunburned friendship is just a disguise

Flattery is smooth and sweet as honey

Designed to attract life's only real prize

All the while, as you scheme and strategize

The light kisses the water's labile lips

Savoring beauty you can't monetize

Both know more than you do about your hips

Study the language waves speak with the sun

We were not made for profit but for fun

Ekphrastic
