A reflection on being a disabled adult in America

Externally soft spoken, internally screaming

Everything is broken, and we’re all just pretending

Self advocacy, a mandatory labor thrust upon the marginalized

It’s important to raise your voice when their listening is paralyzed

It shouldn’t be this hard.

Adulthood stings like a needle, a sharp pain that comes on fast

The burning sets in slower, poison to the iconoclast

The priority lies in terminology

A differently abled world not focused on accessibility

It shouldn’t be this hard.

Spoken for before they’ve said hello

Neglect the prescription and focus on the counterglow

Children don’t stay children, a fissure in the cerebrum

An invisible cage I fear I’m not free from

It shouldn’t be this hard.
