Please Return Me To My Shelf
You are not ready to read my story

You roughly removed me from the book shelf
And began rudely flipping through my pages,
No respect for the fact that this is my life
Starting at birth, following through the ages.
***
What was it that you hoped to find, may I ask
As you stripped me totally naked page by page,
This is my life, my pain, my happiness, my love
My emotions, on each page, from glory to rage.
***
Have I disappointed you, as you discover more
Finding I’m a sinner, when you hoped for a saint,
Discovering my demons, sorry there’s no angels
But my life history is for the strong, not the faint.
***
Yes you’ve bypassed my romantic stories, why
Were you hoping you’d find love without regret,
Sorry, but these pages hold the authentic me
Parts of life I loved and others I’d like to forget.
***
You see, my novel is a non-fiction story of life
It was never meant for you, the faint of heart,
Nor was it ever written so I could be judged
My life experiences are what set us all apart.
***
If you cannot respect my stories, my pages
Please feel free to return me to my shelf now,
So I can continue adding pages to my novel
And allow me to live the best life I know how.

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
