A Villanelle

Pining Season: A Villanelle

Alone at night, I wake & reach for you.

Whate’er shall I do if you don’t want me?

A too brief kiss, you burned before you flew.

My thoughts, in gasps, mistake your form & hue:

In light & shadow, all our dreams I see.

Alone at night, I wake & reach for you.

At first glance, our hearts yearned as if they knew:

Here is the stubborn lock for your sweet key.

A too brief kiss, I burned before you flew.

We drank love’s thirst to slake, missing the cue

Provided by the fates: let passion be.

Alone at night, I wake & reach for you.

Our contract was rash, unearned, unwise, undue:

No wonder then, we paid a fatal fee.

Too brief our kiss, we burned before you flew.

Yet harmonies we make resound anew:

Whate’er shall I do if you don’t want me?

Alone at night, I wake & reach for you.

Too brief our kiss, we burned: it’s time we flew.
