This haiku is about a man named Peter Stumpp, who after enduring torture on the rack, confessed to being a satantic werewolf.

The details of his confession are truly horrifying. The worst crimes he confessed to: murdering pregnant women to tear the fetuses from their bellies and gobble them down. He described their raw hearts as “dainty little morsels”. But the depravity doesn’t end there. He also confessed to an incestuous relationship with his own daughter and to the cannibalistic murder of his own son.

Terrifying.

But taken after excruciating torture, this confession had to have been forced.

Could he have been a serial killer and cannibal guilty of some of the crimes of which he was accused— including the crimes against his children? Yeah, it’s possible.

Could he have transformed into a wolf with the power of a magic belt gifted by the devil?

I don’t think so.

In any case, I don’t know whether he was actually guilty but I can’t believe he felt guilty. If he was innocent his confession was a lie. If he was guilty then he felt no remorse.

Either way, the torture didn’t end with his confession. His execution was drawn out, and made a spectacle— his daughter was also tortured to death for being named a victim in his confession.

So in this case those enacting justice seemed every bit as monstrous as they believed Stumpp to be.
