Her heart swells within her chest as she listens to the silence,
She asks herself, “Am I the only human left on earth?”
She can hear the critters, but human noise is no more,
Hidden in her own world giving civility a wide berth.
******
Her smile widens with gratitude,
The gift of waking to a silent world is a far-fetched dream,
The frogs croak, the birds twitter, even the flies buzz,
But she’s totally alone — or so it seems.
******
She sits contemplating her years,
Finally living within her peace,
Isolated in blessed solitude,
As she shrugs off the stress; letting it all release.
******
As 6am ticks over on the clock,
She hears the burr of a truck slowing down,
Far enough away that it doesn’t shatter her silence,
Just a twinge of annoying sound.
******
The sun warms her skin, turning her a pale shade of tan,
Aussie thong lines abrade her feet,
Hair wild, fresh from bed,
Tossed and tumbled from her peaceful sleep.
******
She sits contemplating staying awhile,
As she’ll miss this tranquility when she departs,
But no, there’s more to see, secret spots to find,
For her, this is just the very start.
About the Creator
Colleen Millsteed
My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
