City of Scars Part II

The Lost Dreamer (of the River Canals) - Photograph by Devin McBride

Wading into the Canals he realized in that moment...the waters of that place were different now... with tears in his eyes he submerged and by the sacrifice of the Last Dreamer, the Curse was broken! Or so it may have seemed.

As one summer ends, another one begins as the years rolled by, but the life and love of Paris filled the void of those long forgotten years of despair, and all was finally at peace. The Last Dreamer is gone, but his lover remained behind. Every night he swam with his long lost love. But every day, the young man dreamed. He dreamed of more. Most of all, he dreamed of Moving On. He swam one last time, whispered goodbye to his lost love. As he walked back down the cobblestone streets towards home, the man looked up at the Eiffel Tower... and all the lights upon it suddenly went out, losing its gilded shine. A shine that lured so many Dreamers to their demise, including the love of his life. A beacon of despair that is now gone for good.

With a satisfied smile, he walked into his home and closed the door. However, across from the house where the river canals lay, something disturbed the water, causing ripples upon its surface.

And the next morning, the people of Paris would find the Lovers' Bridge, a Bridge built with hidden posts filled with love letters, had crumbled away into the canal. Everyone was heartbroken once more. It seemed as if all the sacrifice, all the love that built the bridge was for nothing.

"It's odd..." says the Lover to no one in the crowds that gathered in dismay.

"Last night I dreamt of my lover standing upon this bridge... except in my dream the bridge was made of gold!"

No one heard him as their minds were already filled with thoughts of a better bridge.

He immediately looked over the crowd towards the infamous Eiffel Tower which stood proud and gilded with gold like the night before never happened. As if the Tower of Gold never lost its shine.

Eventually, the Bridge was restored to its former glory and just as much love was built into it if not more. So much love was built into the Bridge of Love that the love letters over-filled the posts set deep in the structure that they scattered into the river like autumn leaves.

However, the Lover was never there to witness any of this, for his dream of Moving on came true, and he moved out of Paris back to his homeland of the United States and he lived peacefully for the rest of his days. With the Lover's absence, the Curse of the Dancing Lover was finally truly broken. And not another Beautiful Dreamer was lost again to this day.
