Out of the Ashes

We rise

Another spark of hate ignites our path,

More flames to burn the progress that we've made.

The past repeats, leaves us the aftermath

Of dark and ash, of peace long since decayed.

Where can we run when leaders yank us back,

When hope and roads less traveled merely burn?

Despair is easy under cruel attack

When people and rights fall at every turn.

Harder it is to mourn and yet to see

Where there is shadow, there must too be light

Illuminating all that we can be -

The good, the kind, the strength to do what's right.

Find faith to fight against the hate and fear -

They knock us down but, steadfast, we're still here.
