It was uncommon to bring sushi
for lunch at school in the early 1990s.
Being the only Asian set of siblings
in the entire school.
Uncommonly, we returned to Taiwan
Every couple of years for
Summer holidays - experiencing
Winter climates instead of the
Australian harsh heat.
It was uncommon being in Taiwan,
and not particularly good at Chinese/
Mandarin, or even Taiwanese.
Even more uncommon to speak
Hakka - another dialect that my
Father's side felt more Pride with.
It was uncommon for my parents
to be standing by our house
on the street, waiting to meet our
new neighbours, say "Hi," and try
to make some
Aussie Friends?
It was uncommon for some kind
neighbours to have invited us
into their homes for barbecues
and lunches and dinners
and welcome us
into Australian society.
