This poem was inspired by my friend Megan McDonald who while writing another poem of her own, gave me the idea to write this. She's truly talented and I am blessed to call her my friend.

My heart
beats through my chest.
This isn't make believe
with me
home practicing with a mic made
from Legos.
It's real now, live.
Open stage, a real mic to shout
away my fragile ego.
o===o
All the poets on stage
before I take my turn are ones
I don't want to follow in case
I get booed and spurned.
o===o
Who am I fooling?
I don't write for the masses.
I write for myself
for my broken heart,
a woe to the healing that is
slow as molasses.
o===o
I step onto the stage, mic live
before me, I'm sure I am sweating
and drowning
in performance anxiety.
o===o
My first words are shouted out
LOUD -- SHE....... is a knife!
The rest goes by quickly as though
I was living someone else's life.
My mind cannot grasp the next
sound I hear
clapping, shouting out, real cheers.
o===o
I am a poet always
but today I have shared my soul,
found a group of people of whom I
can share my whole.

Sounds like you have stage fright. Raw emotions ! Wonderful expressive poem Sam. Nicely Done!!!
I love this - as someone who performs (stand up in my case) I recognise that twist of emotions before you speak and how little of the performance you remember.
Sam! This is heartwarming. I could feel and almost live your emotions and your yearning as I read each word of this poem. Exceptional work, Sam!
Oh gosh, what a throwback to my open mic and slam poetry days. Once the first lines kick in, the rest is a blur! Such a rush! Loved the lego mic too! genius
Fantastic free verse!!! Love this!!!
I think this may be a next step for me too, to take my work to an open mic... You've made it sound daunting but exciting!
Oh wow! Speaking of open mics, I just participated in one last week.
Love this!!
