Only You Know You

The woman behind the face you show the world

Only you can know what it’s like to be you

Nobody else can know what it’s like to live,

Not as you live, as you love, as you laugh

Or as you cry, as you feel or as you give.

***

Only you know how your life felt at its sweetest

Or even the days that you found were bitter,

The days you lived in the arms of love

When life was all moonshine and glitter.

***

Only you know the days when you held on tight

Riding on the back of the dark one’s bike,

Holding your breath as the sun starts to set

Hoping and praying you’d survive in spite.

***

Hoping as you lay down your head at night

That you will make it through another sun rise,

Nobody understands your dreamscape view

Or sees through your day time disguise.

***

Nobody knows the darkness you survive

Or the work it takes to keep it together,

Quiet times when you hide and fall apart

Wondering if you will hurt alone forever.

***

The days when you don’t want to talk about it

So settle a beautiful smile on your face instead,

Fake it until you make it, your daily motto

At night the walls come down as you cry in bed.

***

Nobody knows the pain behind your laugh

Or the heartache the masked face does bring,

All they see is an Angel with bloody knuckles

As they finally realise you earned your wings.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
