Only When I Sleep

In my dreams, I'm not me anymore. I'm you, but I don't know who you are.

I woke and knew I'd lost you again.

You were right there, not with me, but in me.

I'd just seen the world through your eyes. The eyes of an old man in a different time. I know you wanted to tell me something and I've let you down again.

I couldn't get the message.

I know what we learnt in your lifetime is important. I know that's why you're trying to get to me now.

I don't know how to get you back.

We share a body when I sleep. You fill my mind with vivid thoughts. I know they are there when I dream. I see what you lived, but it fades too quickly for me to take with me into the daylight.

I can't remember what you told me.

The day brings only shadows of a memory. The knowledge that what I need is just out of my grasp. I know something is missing, but I may never know what.

You, and by extension I, will remain a mystery for now.

Until I close my eyes again, and I find a way to let you in.
