on the night you came

a poem

By Dane BHPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

dear B,

near midnight,

the roiling world

caught its breath.

the buckling ship

steadied herself long enough

to punch through the next wave

head-on right.

you were born in the

breaking.

we caught you

on a debris-scattered deck,

used our teeth to pull shrapnel

and splinters

from our palms. dear baby,

a blessing on your head,

that you grow up sealegged

and shimmymasted

that you will know sunshine

and calm waters. dear baby,

welcome to the ride.

love,

me

This is gorgeous, such lovely language to create such strong imagery.
