Born around 1 B. C., Simon was a fisherman in Capernaum when he joined Christ Jesus as a disciple. His name was changed to Peter ("rock") and he is most known for betraying Christ, after he was arrested, by denying Him. And three times, just as Christ prophesied, he lied and said he didn't know Him and wasn't with Him. (Matthew 26:69-75)

Prior to that, Peter rebuked the statement that Christ made about being crucified and leaving, and was delivered from satan at that moment by Christ. (Mark 8:32-33)

He died around A.D. 67, shortly before Nero's end of reign in A.D. 68. Christ Jesus had revealed to him that when he was old, he would die as a martyr, and he was crucified in Rome. He was crucified upside down by request as a symbol of his unworthiness compared to Christ Jesus.

Saint Peter. A disciple, an eyewitness to the ministry of Christ Jesus and His crucifixion and Resurrection, an apostle in the continuing ministry of Jesus and a martyr.

May we pick up our cross every day like Peter did.

Amen.
