Oh How I Frightened Thee

As I watched you scamper off into the night

Oh how I frightened thee, unintentionally

I was surprised how easily you took flight,

I believed you to be stronger and tougher

But you scampered off into the night.

***

I thought I could forgive you just once

But then you scampered off again,

Not tolerable a second time, cowardly

Without the courtesy to stay, to explain.

***

You have no place here then, not with me

It takes strength to wander by my side,

As I stroll amongst the bellowing shadows

Where even the lord of the underworld hides.

***

It’s unfortunate I intimidate you so badly

As you realise I am an angel with filthy wings,

I’ve fallen into the sacred halls of darkness

Happy in the destruction these halls bring.

***

See my halo in its corrosive rusted glory

My pride as it highlights the fights I’ve won,

Yes I’ve slowed as I struggle with its weight

But unlike you, you will never see me run.

***

I’ve paid the price of your heartless pain

As I now harbour a soul not quite right,

A little shattered, a little bruised and beaten

Just capable of shining it’s blackened light.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
