Ode to the Moon

Up high always there watching

Ode to the Moon

You always came late

dragging light behind you like guilt

I am grateful you did come.

every one loves you, I think.

You Never asked how I was

never stayed till the birds started

but still I waited,

face up, stupid, glowing.

You didn’t promise,

still you let me believe

you’d show up clear every time

You kept and keep that promise still.

Also when you were full

you didn’t smile

you stared, yes,

like I was something beneath you

I told people

you were mine

but you belonged to no one

just passing through,

burning a hole in the dark

and calling that love

I wrote you

into poems I never showed anyone

left the blinds open

like a door I swore I’d shut

You hung there,

high and cold,

watching me undress

as if it meant less each time

You never touched

but I swear I felt you

sliding over my skin

pulling at the parts I keep quiet

And when you vanished,

new moon, no moon,

you didn’t explain

you just went.

I didn’t cry

didn’t ask

but I stared at the sky like an idiot

pretending it wasn’t empty

Told myself you’d be back

because you always were

but that’s the trick

you come back

not for me

just because you can

The moon and the sun are companions for light and dark and the comfort that they both bring to our souls and bodies. Good job.
