Ode to the Minolta X-700, a Camera

Time Lapse

By Kate Kastelberg Published 2 years ago 1 min read
Top Story - August 2023

you were passed down to me

by my late Grandpa—

an avid NYT crossword doer,

a Virginia Tech engineer,

a devout Jeopardy! watcher,

an unslakable reader,

a consummate archivist

of star sightings and genealogy

Though you are now antiquated—

with insides full of film,

chunky dials and lack of modern sensors,

you are irreplaceable.

Each time the lens focuses,

I learn to macro in on details

or widen out for panoramas,

Fish eye out for effect.

Each time the shutter clicks

my scope gets wider

and the line between subject

and object blurs and clears.

Each time the film roll is developed,

The 24 crisp images

blend and hue too bright

for digital.

Each time it is too dark,

the flash shines in on me too.

With each frame I capture

and carry forth your light.

Love the story behind your camera and how it still teaches❤️

  • I absolutely love this! It sounds like you also had a great relationship with your grandfather, and he sounds a lot like mine. He loved Jeopardy! And Wheel of Fortune, and he’d get excited when I’d watch with him and know the answers to things. Keep writing. Keep experiencing. This is so beautiful. <3
