Ode to Little Italy

Verde Veronese

Little Italy, Arkansas pc: Gabe Eggerling

Bright morning light through crooked pine trees

Wide winding roads and crunchy crinkling leaves

Calm chilly air and wind-blown hair

Breathing begins to hum.

One by one the houses fade

These times are temporary.

Water wells and barbed wire bushes

Vegetable gardens and ross0 bocce cushions

Unlocked doors and safety assures

Crowded thoughts simplify.

Smiling faces from porches wave

These times are temporary.

Sepia shadows sing stories golden

Cellar doors offer cicchetti invitation

Pasta dries around wet laughing eyes

History becomes clear.

Sense of belonging anchored brave

These times are temporary.

Stark surprises bring powerful pain

Holding memories tight in lieu of promise again

Craving chaotic kitchen chatter with people who matter

Community binds like a band-aid.

Resilience, regret and relief ingrained

These times are temporary.

Rocky roads, fishing poles and dirty skinned knees

Slow cemetery strolls and a blue balmy breeze

Terrazzo church floor sprinkled yellow daffodils galore

Faith is restored.

Accordion polka swirls light in step save

These times are temporary.

Crispy cookie crostoli, lemoncello pie

Penny poker bingo night, lightning bug lit sky

Warm crocheted blanket made with love and care,

Savory waft of bread fills the evening air

Moments are momentous.

Times of tradition and overwhelming Italian pride

Grab gratitude for the pocket and enjoy the colorful ride.
