Ocean Blue to Cactus Green

A Poem

By Katherine DockeryPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
Oak Bluffs, MA.

I look outside at the growing green leaves

Strengthened by the power of Spring.

Steadfast they hold to their perch.

I sadly sigh, knowing I won't see their Autumn hues.

By then we will be gone.

This exclusive Island we call home

This vibrant Summer getaway we have loved

This haven of unlocked doors will be a memory.

The aqua blue waters hitting the khaki sands

will lull us to sleep in the dry desert in our waking dreams.

And I

a native Californian - called to this East Coast Island and thrown back into the lively colorful culture of the Southern West Coast

will go from ocean blue and khaki to a rainbow of concrete gray and cactus green.

oh how the calming blues will remind me of who I was...

Surrounded by water that I feared and loved

but rarely visited...

I wish I had gone to the beach more often.

Soon I'll be an Island Girl in a Mojave Desert World.
