O Beaufort

a tribute by R.E. Little

By Robyn LittlePublished about a year ago 1 min read

They say it started with a rose and

Ended with the Virgin Queen

But O Margaret did they not see

That a mother at just 13

Owed the line that changed everything

To a Beaufort most of all

O Beaufort

The wheels turning in your mind

O Beaufort

The son you had to tell goodbye

Through blood and war rose a king

The forgotten woman behind it all

O Beaufort

The Tudor matriarch above all

Forgotten at the back of a dynasty

The Lancastrian king thought never to be

A child widow bright and sure

Did her duty and survived them all

Four kings, 3 husbands, two infamous wars

Alliances through prison walls

Power women could only want

You lived and had it all

O Margaret, your memory still lives on

Rare a woman of the time

And with Woodville on your side

Henry and Elizabeth will rise

O Beaufort

Overshadowed by the great and grandchildren to come

O Beaufort

Education and religion, you had it all

The queen that never was

O Beaufort O Margaret

Let your story be told forevermore
