Noblesse Oblige

A mixed race woman's journey to feeling whole

By Marissa WardPublished 5 years ago 1 min read

I am a black woman who recently discovered my nobility.

I love the hair and skin and curves I tried to outrun.

I can move mountains with my hips and the thickness of my thighs.

I believe we as black woman are meant to take on the mantle of power.

I dream of the world we will create once we do.

I am an Italian woman who carries the language of amore and romance in my veins.

I love the smell of my country’s food as it cooks on the stoves of the women who came before me, wafting through the air.

I can talk loudly and yell and you know it’s an expression of my passione.

I believe family and faith are the foundation of my entire world.

I dream of visiting the green countryside of Agrigento and feeling home underneath my feet.

I am a mixed race woman who can traverse worlds that seem separate.

I love the way my lineages weave themselves together like a patch quilt made of pain and beauty and resilience bound together by gold thread.

I can accept the obligation that comes with nobility, what the French call noblesse oblige.

I believe I am destined to change the world simply by being myself.

I dream of union.
