No Vet Left Behind

American Refugees

By Earl W. PearlPublished 3 years ago 1 min read

Some wounded warriors shed no blood

But bleed tho, just the same

Oppressive thoughts begin to bud

A nightmare feeds the flame

Their restless nights and hungry days

Are shadows blocking light

As joy departs, a numbness stays

Some lose the will to fight

They stand with signs on corner streets

With wounds that may not show

Like Groundhog Day, each day repeats

Each day another low

As Congress funds the refugee

Undocumented some

A veteran fought for you and me

And hardly gets a crumb

Their sacrifice does now condemn

Yes, apathy’s a threat

They fought for us, who fights for them

Who helps the homeless vet

You’ve captured a sad ongoing reality so vividly. Great poem and top story in my book.
