Letting the Damage Work

Withstanding what others cannot

makes you human—

not special, not perfect.

Watching struggle consume the mind

is hard to sit and witness,

but sometimes, we must.

It’s not easy to relax

while those around you

fight a war with their own reflection—

especially when you know

some of the answers they seek.

Afraid to let go,

you push those you want to help

out of reach.

A helping hand only matters

if it’s taken willingly—

and even then,

you must be ready to let go

and let damage do its work.

We are built from mistakes,

and we find ways to learn from them.

But what happens

when we repeat the very things

we were made to grow from?

That answer hides

in the tall grass of self-reflection,

letting us feel comfortable

falling short of who we believe we should be.

We hope for rescue,

but only the kind

that fits our idea of saving.

Growth is never for the world’s benefit—

it’s for ours,

even if we can’t see

its true shape.
