No Escape

You can't outrun it.

It surrounds like a warm blanket in the cold of a winter night

Clinging onto it provides some comfort

Then to awaken as if due to some horrid fright

And nothing will make you feel saved

-

You'll fight it off until your last breath escapes you in your bed

And use every ounce of your strength to try

But nothing pushes off the inevitable dread

To believe otherwise only leads to a failed and sad attempt

-

But you'll try and try again, or so says my friend

Few knew the feeling of facing that untimely demise

One step further, always from now unto the end

Knowing that anything else is selfish and unwise

-

With head held high, that blanket around you is left behind

You struggle, but find one reason today to continue

It gets harder to do the simple and remember to be kind

Nobody knows the struggle and war going on inside of you

-

The side of you once filled with life and luck feels too morose

Alone in the world with your own truth

From within you it devours

There's the never-ending feeling that the end is getting close

-

Surrounded you are, and nothing you can do to change the facts

Like that warm and comfy blanket from childhood

It surrounds and holds you, and there is no escaping its attacks

You know the end is near, in a way only you could

-

It holds you ever tighter

The light disappears

That veil between here and there grows lighter

And the darkness behind is all you see, except for those covered in tears

-

The end is near

Your poem is touching and the pain it reveals is intense. That "always one more step" until the end is a universal hope we all hold onto, both for ourselves and for the people we love. I hope you find comfort in the love of your family and the memories of special times together. Keep writing and

Jason, your writing speaks to the quiet battles many fight internally. The rhythm and repetition deepen the emotional impact, making each stanza feel like another wave of struggle.

  • I feel your pain. Life is short! I have Thalassemia, a Mediterranean anemia. My poppa passed of the leukemia from the Thalassemia, so I live one day at a time. I love your poetry. I send you virtual roses
