The cool night is gentle
It never barges in
- even when I do.
From my toughest nightmares
Awake or asleep
It shelters me
Knowing just how to humm...
And even when the chimes of night
Don't soothe me back to sleep
I'm blessed to bathe
In the quiet dark
She says, "Don't you see your thoughts are too loud for right now, my dear?"
Every star
Every stone
Every tree -
Even the moon is mindful at this time
Shining without noise...
When I think about this,
Some nights angry
Some crying,
Sometimes both -
No care in the world
No worming thought
No booming ache
Can move me to forsake my Dark Mother.
It's simply nature
That when I open my heart
The swells of voices in my head
Dissolve like waves into her sea.
This poem is part of a series of 25 daily word experiments I am committing to for the month of October. The motto: “Sometimes garbage, sometimes sweet, not fun everyday, but everyday anyway!” Intrigued to experience what can be created (and discovered) in the process of developing a consistent writing practice, I will be writing a poem a day until my Vocal+ subscription ends at the end of the month. Let’s gooooo!
