Nature's Design

A "Sound of First Frost" Challenge Entry

By Cindy CalderPublished 2 months ago 1 min read

Brisk air breezes through the first winter’s frost laden dew

While ice infused wind whispers, crackling the leaves on cue

Winter creeps forth in abundance this early wintry morn

Covering the grasses with the frost of its ice encrusted scorn

*

Squirrels scurry about in search of buried berries and nuts

As deer lurk behind frozen limbs - staying hidden is a must

Still, small footprints break through fragile layers of thin ice

Marking their presence in nature’s splendid way, ever concise

*

The beauty of birds’ voices fills the frosted morning air

Telling a tale of exuberance, contentment, and life with no care

While from the window you spy the evolving turn of events

Pondering just how quickly autumn departed without your consent

*

Imbibing the fresh aroma of brewed coffee, your mood lightens

Sun streams through glistening trees, the day’s begun to brighten

While dew slowly melts into glistening diamonds strewn about

Into gems glowing with bursting life, of this there can be no doubt

*

The neighbor’s dog gallops over the lawn, barking on high alert

Excited and anxious, he’s always rambunctious and eager to exert

His dominance over what he’s discovered lurking near and wide -

But then thunderous calls sound and merry excursions subside

*

Bright colors linger as flower buds peep through the frost

As though fighting in unified resistance, eager to defrost -

They turn their heads to the warmth of sun’s glaring disguise

Trying to quash winter's wrath and a chilly morning surprise

*

The frost of the dew evolves, takes on a new life this cold day

In a glorious moment, awakening all to a new season on display

Wintry enchantment woven of majestic nature sparkles and shines

In icy renewal, a rebirth, completely sculpted with nature’s design

Love the rhyming here. I also enjoyed the celebratory mood of the poem. The closing is, well, to use your word "thunderous." "In icy renewal..." is fantastic. I've often walked through snow or ice and seen those "small footprints" break through. This is a wonderful, sensory-rich poem. Nice work!

Oh, Cindy, is there a form of poetry you cannot do? I'm in awe. Also, I don't know how but I seem to have missed your work lately, so catching up here.

I appreciate how you capture not just the scenery, but the behavior of animals adapting to the shift in season. Their presence grounds the poem in an ecological truth that enriches the overall experience.

Winter is far less savage when viewed through frosted window panes. I loved your suburban amble through winter’s unwelcome arrival. Lovely, lively poetry. Good luck in the challenge, Cindy. Well done!
