My Reflection

It's what I see when I look within!

By J.W. BairdPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

I've been told beauty is what you see on the inside, and the eyes are the windows to your soul.

So this is the lesson of what one should see within their own reflection.

Society tells girls they should be tall and thin. Boys are too soft if they don't stay strong, only smile, and grin.

But there are days when we all need to cry. Dealing with harsh realities is the main reason why.

If you have looks you are pretty, if you have book smarts you are a geek. The words others call us are made to make us feel week.

If you are popular and athletic you can be famous. If you are shy and meek you can't really be blameless.

Today our young ones look at the wrong ones as role models. You got to speak up, stand tall, and shout from the hill tops.

If you want to make a real difference you need to show others who you are, and they will make their own inference.

No one ever knows the real me. They assume who I am... based on what they see.

"Look deeper!" I say. Past my outer appearance. That's where your soul and your heart lie and hold that which is dearest.

There is no cruelty only beauty inside. The only ugliness is hiding what ugly mess resides deep within my mind.

There are days where I struggle with negative thoughts. That is when I remind myself about who I am with positive self talk.

A strong, indigenous woman is what you view. As you dismiss, and ignore, and always look through.

I have always been smart, educated, and independent. But then why do I question my own self when others deny it.

Do I not know myself better than others. The joys, the celebrations, the worries, and struggles.

The fighter within, that holds on inside. When things get hard, and those sad thoughts creep in my mind.

I have always had a take charge attitude, and a lot of self-confidence. A large personality that overflows with common sense.

Perseverance, and resilience a few other things too. I know is inside of me, but not according to you.

I'm overlooked, or I'm questioned, and told I intimidate others too.

But the real question you should be asking yourself is what you do!

We all point fingers and tell others who they should be. But when you look into the mirror who do you see?

I see drive, I see determination, I see responsibility, and some one who has survived. All the things meant to break me and never encouraged me to thrive.

That is what I see when I look into my eyes. A reflection of me and all the things within that lie.

Do not confuse me with your own cynicism. The reason I pull back and don't interact is based on my skepticism.

To be lied to, and cheated on, and stabbed in the back. Is why I am the way that I am, and how I may act.

I can handle others' criticism because I am very well aware of my own faults. We all have some flaws even if you are in doubt.

You have them too. None of us are perfect. Believe me! Check out your own reflection.

I do not just mean what is on the surface, dig deep down inside, and search for your life's purpose.

If you care for others and treat everyone the same. Help those in need and take accountability for your actions rather than place blame.

I guarantee, when you look inside, you will find your true reflection that is not meant to hide.

I know what I see when I look within... I see a true reflection of me!

Who Am I?

I keep asking myself. I spent half of my life as a single mother. Pushing myself to be the strong independent individual that I have always been. My kids have grown and my life seems turned upside down.

I now search to find myself!
