My New Client Looks Like a Pirate

Though he needed a sword and a flask

He looks like a pirate

Earring in one ear

Chain around his neck

Impressive black beard

Cape of red

And pants to match

Does he want me dead?

Only needs an eyepatch

Sun-wrinkled skin

And hoarse voice

Legendary swagger

His life of choice

At high sea

Commandeering ships

Or other vehicles maybe

I’m putting down all my chips

Confidence that makes

Ladies of the town swoon

Shipmates walk the plank

At high noon

Ladies sing and dream

The rest of the day

Of the man they met

Out in harm’s way

Who without a doubt

Uses charm to beguile

Behind his mask

With an unseen smile

Rotting gums

And gold tooth

Make this tale I’ve spun

An undeniable truth

performance poetry
