Trapped me and kept me

Captive in your home

But little do you know

Rather than a prison cell

You created my cocoon

You thought you broke me down

And dragged my spirit

Through the mud

But all you really did

Was give this leafy stem a bud

Start the metamorphosis

I was changing taking shape

And rewriting my very being

With eyes awash in glue

A sticky butterfly stew

The truth I was finally seeing

When you thought that it was over

I burst forth in glorious day

The world thunderous with praise

A new creation

Found salvation

And is making her own way

Maybe a Common Blue with

A rare fighting spirit

A Monarch with a queen’s crown

And the world is here for it

A Pearl-bordered Fritillary

Adorned with precious stones

Gracing the multitudes with

Her presence in their homes

Full of color and life

I took wing I took flight

Away from your claws

Your snapping jaws

Trying to gulp me down your maw

Swallow up my essence

So that I couldn’t shine

Unfortunately for you

Away I flew because

My life is mine.
