I wear it all the time
So you can’t see me.
Maybe I will take it off
on Halloween,
dress myself up as me
like you’ve never seen,
maybe no one has.
You’ll never know,
I’ll never show
you a chart to decipher
what is real from
my pretense, which is
also real and completely
mine.
I don’t have to give
myself up to you,
don’t have to let you
see anything I want
to keep hidden.
Even if you caused it,
my pain is
none of your business.
But maybe this year,
on all Hallow’s Eve,
I’ll take it off for a moment
so you can see me
dressed up in everything
you’ve done to me
so you can witness
my rejection of who
you want me to be.
I wear the mask
because you are a monster.

I like how you turned this into your protection from another. Great poem! :)
