My Demons

What’s in my Mind

By Mark Stigers Published 9 months ago Updated 9 months ago 1 min read

I have a demon—

It gnaws at my spine.

The pain that it infects

Is always on my mind.

Oh, I can take a pill

Or use a nice salve.

The pain always comes back—

It just drives me mad.

The strange thing is,

The pain is only in my mind.

There is no way to ignore it;

It’s with me all the time.

They say they will burn the nerves,

And I say that’s alright.

It makes me think about

What I’ll do to win this fight.

I will destroy a part of my body

To take the pain away—

A thing that lives inside my mind

Is stealing every day.

Who should pay for this?

Insurance fights the cost.

But I’ll do anything, you see,

To make this pain be lost.
