I wrapped my broken heart in a thousand layers of linen

Careful to cover the cracks.

I wrapped my broken heart with a note attached

Lost right now but waiting to get delivered; traveling far and wide

I’ve packaged this heart up with twists and ties.

I wrapped my heart up in carefully cut pieces of cloth

Made sure to cast out its demons if ever again it gets sought

I put this heart in the hands of a man, my layers unfolding in his eager hands

Now I must wrap it once more and forget about the fabric he tore

I wrapped my broken heart in a thousand layers of cheesecloth

And I’ll wait till the end of this era, I’ll forge a new start-

And I’ll wait for the sands of time; for the dessert wind to uncover my mummy.

And one very carefully preserved heart.
