Mother

A poem

Top Story - October 2025

I would rather be a good mother

than be a good friend

My kids are here eternally

but our friendship, that might end.

-

I would rather be a good mother

than be a good daughter

My kids have overflowed my cup

your love is like withheld water

-

I would rather be a good mother

than be a good employee

My kids notice when I'm gone

while a job easily replaces me

-

I would rather be a good mother

than be a good cousin, niece, or aunt

My kids gave me a reason to live

they've done everything you can't

-

I would rather be a good mother

than be a good sister

My kids have given me serenity

You've made my life a twister

-

I would rather be a good mother

than a good whatever it may be

My kids love me all the time

your love comes conditionally

-

I dream of living in a world

where I don't sacrifice one for the other

But since you want to make me choose,

I choose to be their mother

Great job showing your dedication to your children above all else—something that I would hope all good mothers would feel. Well written, and congrats on the Top Story!

Damn, Sara, you always hit so hard with rhymes that it makes me feel bad every time I say "ew, rhymes" lol. Of course, it's just my own annoyances with writing in rhymes. This is so buttery smooth and packs a real punch behind the eloquence and beauty of the important message. Absolutely loved it and another great decision by Vocal to give this Top Story.

  • good choice!
