Money talks to me

But do I listen?

Money speaks to me.

It mostly says goodbye.

No kiss farewell,

it does not cry,

Just flies.

Money talks to me, serious,

Never curious, it only says what's what,

Sits in my pot for barely a moment before

It walks out the door.

Money never grows, however much I nurture and care for it.

Money only shows it cares not for me.

Prices only rise as wages barely move,

As if to prove what I already knew,

That of all the pennies I earn, I will keep but few.

Another day another dollar.

Who for? I holler.

99c for the taxman, gasman, rent and bills, no thrills.

I'm lucky to have just the penny left for me.

Growth of my shares never lasts.

At last, I think, the downward spiral is looking up,

Starting to rise with my hopes.

Should I sell now, while I can?

Prove that I am a better man than the speculators can ever be.

No, I hold on and see my stocks drop off the inevitable cliff.

Shift my stash, move my cash.

Go back to work as if

Nothing had ever happened.

Money's a game I find not worth the playing.

Money doesn't talk to me anymore.

It goes without saying.

Not sure if the above counts as stream of consciousness. Sorry but I never went to poetry school and tend to just make it up as I go along.

Please feel free to comment and I would appreciate any views on what constitutes stream of consciousness and whether the above verse is.

Thanks for reading

If you made it up as you went along, it counts as stream of consciousness, and you did a lot better job as a poet than any economic prognosticator ever has, which your poem does a good job of pointing out! Well-wrought!

How true for out money is there and gone before one notices. This could be a stream of consciousness poem for I feel a lot of mine are these kinds or simply called freeverse.

I haven’t written one myself but I went to fetch this from Google for you, I hope it helps: Stream of consciousness is a narrative style that tries to capture a character’s thought process in a realistic way. It’s an interior monologue, but it’s also more than that. Because it’s mimicking the non-linear way our brains work, stream-of-consciousness narration includes a lot of free association, looping repetitions, sensory observations, and strange (or even nonexistent) punctuation and syntax—all of which helps us to better understand a character’s psychological state and worldview. It’s meant to feel like you have dipped into the stream of the character’s consciousness—or like you’re a fly on the wall of their mind. Your writing is very relatable and I liked that you spoke your mind freely, it translate for a good read. Well done.
