Money Eater
A free-verse poem about my past struggle with shopping addiction and heavy need for money
I was hungry
for fat stacks of paper bills,
coins and coupons.
Shopping was medicine
that kept me sane
and protected from alienation.
I craved loonies and toonies
so I can be a rich chick
and a lucky ducky.
Being rich made me
jolly as a hopping frog
and free of salty tears.
I was ravenous for
bronze tickets I could use
to fill up my home library.
I would devour
round and shiny silver coins
at the vast, polished and crowded shopping centre.
When I've eaten all
my fat stacks of coins,
paper bills and coupons,
I was full as a mammoth jar
of marbles, diamonds
and pendants.
Once I had all I wished for
I would sleep like a baby
in a comfy crib.
After I've shopped and walked,
my fear, tension and impatience
would vanish like healed bruises.
Thank you for taking the time to read another one of my addiction-related poems. If you've struggled with the same addiction as me growing up, I'm sure we can all relate. Unless you've struggled with it yourself, you'll never know how debilitating this kind of addiction is. When you think about nothing but money and shopping all the time (I'm not talking about when you want or need to get something the odd time), it loses your ability to enjoy what you have in the moment.
