Missing You at Christmas
A poem and a Christmas song

This was written some Christmases ago. The photo is of my parents shortly after they got married in Germany.
This Christmas as always,
your love will shine down upon me
and I’ll content be -
to know that your love goes on.
It took a war to separate you,
later to bring you together,
to find eternal love
and build a new life.
As I decorate my shining tree,
the evergreen will remind me of my love for you.
The many shiny and bright childhood Christmases -
that you both gave to me.
Those tall glittering Christmas trees,
presents galore,
a love that warmed the soul
and a family that always smiled.
It comforts me,
to know that you're together,
dancing among the clouds,
swinging on bright, shimmering stars.
With every Christmas song,
with every silvery tinsel,
every shiny ornament -
there’ll be an ache in my heart.
Come Christmas Eve,
I know you’ll be with me,
perhaps I can wander,
out in the frosty night.
There to look up at the stars,
to find your loving faces,
looking down upon me
and for a moment together we can be.
It’s Christmas time,
once more and time has flown,
had I but known—
how many Christmases would be without you.
So glad to know,
that your love shines on,
throughout eternity,
from year to year.
So have yourselves a merry little Christmas,
up beyond the stars and make my yuletide bright,
by being a part of my Christmas—
love you very much, Mom and Dad.
