Or, Why "Mindfulness" Doesn't Work in My Mind

"Close your eyes."

Okay. Wow, I’m really tired! Closing my eyes may not be a good idea…

"Take a deep breath."

Okay. Breathing I can do…

"Keep breathing. Focus on each breath."

If you don’t keep breathing, you faint. That would be embarrassing. Embarrassing is such a weird word. Two r’s AND two s’s.

Weird is a weird word, too…

"Create a picture in your mind. A peaceful place."

Okay. How about a beach?

Like Sanibel! That was a great vacation.

All those shells! I should do something with those shells. Maybe Michael’s has…something…on sale. I should look on Pinterest…

"Can you see your picture?"

My picture? I haven’t made it yet! Are frames on sale at Michael’s?

"Is the picture clear in your mind?"

Oh. Right. That picture…

"Use your senses to sharpen the picture. What can you hear, and smell, and feel?"

I can’t see anything. My eyes are closed. Duh!

I can hear … people. All around me. So many people. What are they doing on my beach?

I can smell … French fries. And ketchup. And onions. Somebody brought lunch.

And now I feel hungry. How much longer is this class? Can I go yet?

"You are warm."

I am warm. Too warm. It’s hot in here.

"You are comfortable."

I am comfortable. My mat is soft and comfy like my bed…

"You are relaxed."

I am relaxed…

I am sleepy…

I am ready for a nap…

I am…yawn…

"Good job, everyone!"

Wha- Must have dozed off. Again.

"Keep that focus, that positive energy, that peace, with you all day. Until next time."

Sigh…
