Matters of the Heart

A Sonnet

In peace and joy, I found your open heart.

I wondered, "Will our love stand tests of time?"

We got off to a steamy, rousing start,

Which left us precious little room to climb.

*

And yet, we found new ways to keep thing fresh,

And never uttered words that would offend.

Our love was more than matters of the flesh.

I found in you, a soulmate, a best friend.

*

But then, one day, your heart would beat no more,

And my heart broke in two right then and there.

I know not what's beyond my next closed door,

And at this time, I hardly even care.

*

Our love did stand the tests of time, my friend,

For I will love you to my bitter end.
