Dearest Luna, my oldest friend,
It's me, Samantha.
I like you most when you're full, shining in all your glory.
No one makes fun of YOU for being big and round.
You know that mean girl, Hailey, I told you about?
Today, she had everyone in the cafeteria chanting,
"Fat Sam ate a ham! Fat Sam ate a ham!"
I wanted a magic fairy to whisk me away to your surface, where no one could make fun of me.
I thought briefly about trying to take my life,
But then I thought, "Mom would kill me."
Then I laughed at myself.
Seriously, I couldn't do that.
They say the biggest revenge is to live well.
So, here's my plan:
I'm going to take as many advanced placement courses as I can.
I'm going to be valedictorian.
My speech in front of everyone at graduation will be about accepting everyone for who they are --
Big, small, gay, straight, people of all colors and beliefs.
When I say, "big," I'm going to look Hailey straight in the eyes.
Then, I'm going to become an aerospace engineer.
Someday, Luna, maybe I'll pass you by on the way to another planet.
I'll be testing a new spacecraft that I helped invent.
Until then, I'll keep watching you wax and wane.
I'll write you again when I'm not too busy studying.
Farewell for now, Luna, my oldest, dearest friend.
Yours,
Samantha
