Lost Highway

A black mist falls

around this car

as confusion lays down

pieces of time are breaking

crack by crack

falling through this thin ice

the dream I was having is shattering

like glass hitting a floor

the life I was holding is fading

like fog burning away

~

I think of now and then

I think of how I got lost

on this lost highway

my foot on the brake

my mind full of curses

I look at the devil next to me

I pray to the god above me

I see the fires burning

in the mirror’s reflection

I see the smoke clouds

in the view ahead

~

Where will I go

now that I don’t know

now that the last mile feels like a sin

I'm falling

even though I'm standing still

outside the birds are singing

the leaves are rustling

but all I hear

is the roaring in my ears

my mind keeps telling me to go

my heart keeps begging me to stay

my hand slides over the shifter

my foot grows restless on the pedal

~

Am I on the edge of this cliff

or have I already fallen

halfway down

am I only the next breath

or have I already

made a promise

to step forward

to drive until the tires

turn enough times

to leave

behind the air

drowning me

~

Roll the windows down

let the wind blow in my hair

turn the radio on

all I have to do is go

all I have to find is

freedom

waiting

in the colors

of a blue sky sun

shining in the light

of places

I’ve never been

This feels so freeing—like the first breath after being underwater. I love how your words capture both the ache of leaving and the joy of discovering what’s ahead. Truly beautiful imagery.
